Question: My sister-in-law physically harassed my mother. How can I save her?

Asked from: Jharkhand

You should immediately report the physical harassment to the police station. After that, you can file a civil suit under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 to obtain security and an injunction against the daughter-in-law’s misconduct.

To file the civil suit, you should approach the court of the Deputy Collector. The Deputy Collector will pass an order against the daughter-in-law and prohibit her from engaging in any violence. The Deputy Collector may also direct the station house officer of the local police station to periodically take a report from your mother regarding any incidents of physical violence.

Before filing the civil suit, it is important to gather evidence of the physical violence/harassment. The proceedings under the senior citizen act are summary in nature and can be completed within six months.
